16 things about me

Self-portrait with my Rebel xti

  1. I have a "hair" file with 20-25 different pages that I've ripped out of catalogs and magazines. Every haircut is short, choppy, and blonde.
  2. I love skin products - especially face stuff.
  3. I really hate possums.
  4. I own 20 pairs of shoes: 10 pairs of clogs, two pairs of Reefs, two pairs of Asics Running Shoes, one pair of cowboy boots, one pair of UGGs, one pair of pink Crocs, one pair of Cole Haan Nike Air black patent leather pumps, and two pairs of random sandals.
  5. I do a totally perfect impression of Rush's Getty Lee singing Tom Sawyer. If you don't believe me, ask anyone who has played Rock Band with me.
  6. I cuss a lot.
  7. I love goofy word play - I would be very good at naming OPI colors.
  8. I'm afraid of most animals - even at the zoo.
  9. I normally can't watch "R" rated movies. I have almost no tolerance for violence.
  10. My favorite movie is the Sound of Music.
  11. I love spicy food.
  12. I'm only super silly around people I trust.
  13. I drink gallons of sparkling water every week (if it's bad for you, I don't want to know).
  14. I'm an introvert. I'm very comfortable speaking at big events, but I don't like big parties, crowds, or too much small talk with people I don't know. I get very overwhelmed and anxious. I like small groups of good friends and family.
  15. I talk to myself constantly and with such focus that I normally scream and jump 10 feet when Steve calls my name. He used to scream back, now he just shakes his head.
  16. After six years of waiting tables and bartending my way through college and grad school, I still "face my bills" (in the same direction & ascending order) and scream "behind you!"

If you blog, consider yourself tagged. Leave a link in the comments and tell us where we can learn all of the weird stuff about you. If you don't blog, the least you could do is leave a comment and give us a peek behind the scenes.

I, too, love skin products, can't tolerate watching any type of violence, and get heartburn in large crowds. I also love watching American Idol and am a huge car singer/dancer. It's amazing how I sound EXACTLY like Nora Jones in the car with the radio blaring, yet absolutely nothing like her when the radio isn't on. Luckily I am married to a man who loves to dance and sing in the car and we do amazing duets (especially to AC/DC and 50 cent). Our son has such a bright future =).

I just love your blog and ordered your book yesterday; 'm anxiously awaiting its arrival.

I played this game yesterday but tweaked it a bit. After I let it go I felt a little exposed. Absolutely relating to your post Oprah post. http://withoutfilters.blogspot.com/2009/01/16-dreams-of-mine.html

Yes, I can vouch for you on #5 and #6! And I'm still with you on #16 - facing those bills and putting them in order.

1. My husband and I made our wedding invitations from the jeans we were wearing on our first date. I've never written that down before and it sounds kinda creepy instead of sweet.

2. This year will be our twentieth wedding anniversary. I have now been with him longer than I was without him.

3. I have a thing for Sharpies. Did you know they make paint markers too, perfect for signs, posters, or lunch bags.

4. "Life without music would be a mistake."-Nietzsche. I'm listening to Dave Matthews/Central Park Concert right now.

5. Having children is a direct challenge to basic human survival instincts. It's like reaching in to your chest, ripping your heart out and deciding to wear it on your sleeve for the rest of your life. I did it twice.

6. Writing stuff about my family and publishing it to the internet scares me. I'm gonna do a few things that scare me in 2009.

7. I love kids. I like most kids better than I like most adults.

8. The older I get the more I respect and appreciate my Mommie.

9. Boys are smelly. I live with one man, two boys and two male cats. Sometimes I just really need to talk to a girl.

10. I get an endorphin rush from recycling. Crazy but true.

11. I get choked up reading a Starbucks to-go cup. Seriously, here is what it said on my cup today: I have faith. Faith in our wondrous capacity for hope and good, love and trust, healing and forgiveness. Faith in the blessing of our infinite ability to wonder, question, pray, feel, think and learn. I have faith. Faith in the infinite possibilities of the human spirit.
-James Brown, sportscaster NFL Sundays

12. I question my Faith often.

13. Last night I couldn't help my son with his homework (he's nine). I consulted a book, the internet, my husband, and called the smartest guy I knew in HS. I almost went to school today to see if his teacher could do this Algebra problem or if it was a trick.

14. I am so grateful that I can call someone I haven't spoken to in a few years who says it's so nice to hear my voice, and he really wants to help with the Math, he's on his way out the door and will call back when he gets to his destination.

Then he does call back, and I find out he's in Stanford Children's Hospital with his son...and he still wants to help with my son's Math homework. That gives me faith in the human spirit and friendship.

15. My family and friends mean the world to me.

16. What's left to say...I love cheese. Almost any kind.

My husband and I have been friends since we were 4 years old (I was the only girl he invited to his 5th birthday).

I wish I was a good cusser, but I am not. I sound ridiculous- like I am quoting someone cooler than myself.

I can’t think of one time that I have honked the horn in my car.

I too was a waitress in college and sucked at it- no one could ever hear what I was saying during the specials, and I spilled more drinks than I served.

I have never had a drop to drink- I realized early on that moderation was not my thing and that I should never start drinking.

I love to dance at home and in the car- with immediate family only. I absolutely cannot dance in front of anyone else.

My uncle was a folk singer- Townes Van Zandt,- he opened up the world of folk music to me- I have loved it ever since.

I would be totally content in a culture where women no longer, shaved, wore make up, or used hair products of any kind.

While I am a good mom in the sense of knowing and loving my kids- I am truly terrible at other aspects of the job- keeping us on a schedule, keeping the house clean, staying organized, and multitasking.

I have quit Dr. Pepper about 5 times in my adult life. I am hoping this one sticks.

I love the Christian Church calendar- the rhythm of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, etc…

I once spent a month living at a convent- I was so inspired by the nuns that I considered it myself (this happened to be while I was engaged!)

I never trust anyone else in the house to lock the doors at night- I insist on doing it myself.

I love art and photography, but have no inkling of interest to try it myself.

I wish I were a singer/songwriter.

I am addicted to facebook scrabble.

1. I love to be lazy (e.g., veg in front of the TV, take a nap, sleep in late).
2. Except for rare exceptions, I dislike shopping, especially at shopping malls. Book stores and craft stores are exceptions.
3. I have almost an entire room full of craft supplies (that I don’t use nearly often enough).
4. When it comes to clothes, I prefer comfort over style.
5. Snow makes me happy (which is a good thing, since I live in Buffalo!).
6. Large groups of people make me anxious.
7. I have a strange obsession with office supplies.
8. I have in depth conversations with my cat. He’s a good listener.
9. I had my very first cavity after the age of 40… it was very depressing!
10. I’m pretty sure that I could live on cheese alone. It is my favorite food. Too bad it isn’t a health food.
11. Despite constant efforts, I can never seem to be organized.
12. I am not a good multi-tasker. It took me a lot of years to learn/admit that about myself.
13. I love Mexican food. I could eat it every day.
14. If I ever won the lottery (which I won’t since I don’t play), I’m pretty sure that I would be perfectly happy just puttering around all the time.
15. I enjoy being near water—oceans, lakes, rivers, fountains, whatever. When I'm driving near water, I find it very distracting.
16. I prefer my coffee warm, rather than hot. An ice cube or two works great.

OK, so there are a LOT of weird things about me, but because I tend to tell (pontificate) WAY more than is healty to ANYONE who is unfortunate to cross my path, I figured I write about a truly bizzare thing about me that I CANNOT CONTROL that many people, even close friends don't know about me. Here it is (and, no I'm not crazy--at least not bad enough where they have to remove you from the general public): electricity is wonky about/around me. You know those new lightbulbs that are supposed to last about 7 years? Yea, you do. Well, last year I went through about 5 of them (and not because my kids knocked over the lamp or something like that). Electrical things go on the fritz around me a staticialy improbable amount of time. I spend a lot of money on lightbulbs and getting things fixed. Let me tell you, it costs some green. I usually don't tell people this, because I'm afraid they would get that look that says "she's REALLY" delusional, isn't she?"

I have been reading here for a short while, and am particularly inspired about your research on shame. I asked my husband to order your book for me yesterday, and believe that I will learn some eye-opening things. Then your sensible, honest, insightful post about Oprah. I was saved by Geneen Roth, as I read one of your other readers say. Now, i am working on this Shame thing that seems to run chords through my life.
Even as i wrote out 16 things about myself, I kept noticeing that there was shame threaded through them... I know through Geneen that positive change does not come about with shame being its catalyst. I look forward to exploring this in 09 as I anticipate reading your book.

blessings to you.

These posts remind me of Amy Rosenthall's book, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life. She writes these kinds of things about herself in the form of an encyclopedia.

Here are a few of mine:
A-My name is ANGELA. When I was very young, I had a speech impediment so severe that I couldn't even say my own name. I also confused my 'tr' with 'f' sound. So when I tried to say, "Hey everybody, look at that truck," I didn't understand why everyone laughed. (maybe this entry would fit better under F?)

B-I danced holes in the souls of my BOOTS while attending a Christian college that believed dancing was a sin.

C-When I took a class in college that required part of our discussions to be done through instant messaging I realized how much self-CENSORING I do. I would put words down and before hitting send, I would delete them. It felt like I was deleting myself.

16 things about me-

1) I love my life, the good the bad the ugly the scary the sad the joy, all of it the yummy and the sour. I suppose it is the only way to love life.
2) I have a Master's Degree in Sociology, but often wonder what it would be like if people were only able to go to college after age 30. I have a deeper understanding of things than I did in my 20's. Wish I was in college now sometimes...
3) I adore the bed crashers ages 3 and 6 who sneak into our bed in the wee hours.
4) I need to come to terms with my hatred of cleaning.
5) I have read at least 2 books a week since I quit my job last May. The Librarians all know my name and I always have a stack of reserve books.
6) I love going to the dentist for teeth cleanings, I also feel naked if I do not floss my teeth.
7) I become more uncertain of what I believe the older I get. I also think about it more.
8) I cannot sleep on occasion and try to embrace the time spent awake.
9) I have 3 children, one husband, one dog and 3 amazing sisters. I have also been blessed with some of the best girl friends in the world.
10) I am an artist, but I am shy to show.
11) I moved to the most beautiful place on earth a few years ago and say wow every day.
12) I use a drink to relax on really tough days.
13) I use food as a drug when I am really stressed.

I've been thinking about this all week. Here goes me!

1. I love, love, love my new Muk Luk slipper boots so much that I sometimes wear them to bed.

2. I am currently experiencing day 15 of enforced naps for my 15 month old. She has a serious aversion to her crib.

3. I LOVE great photography. Especially pictures where close up is clear and the background is blurry (I'm sure there is a name for this). I got a great camera for Christmas and am so excited to take a photography class.

4. I love New Mexico. I love it that there is an entire culture based on a chili pepper.

5. I craved margaritas on the rocks and sweet and sour soup while pregnant (didn't indulge in the margaritas).

6. I'm addicted to looking at Facebook and reading peoples blogs.

7. I love caffeine free diet soda. I think it is my best friend.

8. I can't wear pink. I look like a big pink blob. Therefore, my daughter wears pink all the time. It makess me happy.

9. I had frantic barking dogs when someone rang my doorbell today. I am really concerned it was a girl scout selling cookies and I won't find another before it is too late to order my thin mints.

10. I taught aerobics before I got married. I loved wearing the microphone thing and kinda thought I was a little bit like Madonna.

11. When I was in grade school my mother advised me (after much teasing) to tell people that I dyed my hair red and painted on my freckles every morning. I did do this and my mom actually got a phone call from one of my friend's parents about it.

12. I love cooking for entertaining and making big pots of soups, but hate cooking dinner.

13. I could just roll in Better Batter ice cream from Maggie Moo's.

14. My parents are truly the best people I've ever known.

15. I love TV. Probably more than love. DVR has changed my life. Not for the better.

16. I loved Barbie dolls as a child. Every time I go to the store I look at Barbie's. Did she damage me? I am trying to figure out what I will say when my daughter asks for one.

I blog but I am freaking lazy to write 10 things about me. But something in your list belongs to me as well.....I HATE big parties because I don't' do small talk and I get headaches just thinking about talking superficial stuff with people I really don't care about. Leave me at home with my good books and you will see a totally different person.
