I'm totally addicted to this Houston band. I recently met Eric, the incredibly talented trumpet player - very cool guy. The sound is new and old and just awesome. I love this entire album. "Maybe It's True" is haunting to me.

freddy fender, burt reynolds, and my me-ma

Today would have been my grandmother's birthday. She was one of the most important people in my life. She was a bit unconventional, but that made her pretty fantastic in the eyes of her offbeat grandkids.

My family is from San Antonio and we all grew up steeped in many of the wonderful Mexican traditions that give that city its heart and soul. One of the those traditions is the Day of the Dead or El Día de los Muertos. The holiday, also known as All Souls Day, is about gathering to celebrate and pray for friends and family members who have died.

My mom, who is incredibly creative (and awesome), took a class on Day of the Dead alters at Casa Ramirez - a gallery and store in Houston. For the past few years we've paid tribute to my grandmother with an alter. Here are a few pictures:

Here's a little something I wrote about my grandmother. How can you not love the woman who actually mailed your picture to Bob Barker because she thought you should be in the Miss America pageant?

Ellen Teague Taylor

beauty operator in residence on Schley Avenue
who loved polyester, KFC, and hamburgers from Dairy Queen

she ordered enchiladas and craved deviled eggs
she read the National Inquirer and smoked Benson & Hedges
she had little crushes on Burt Reynolds and Freddy Fender

she liked cowboy boots and really big hair
and always watched Dallas and the Jefferson's

she loved instant tea with extra ice and Sweet 10
Scrabble was her game when she wasn't playing solitaire
or spying on the neighbors from the front door window
eating petit fours and whistling the theme from Murder She Wrote

she danced during Hee-Haw and Lawrence Welk, and loved to go fishing, and slapped her thigh when she laughed

Me-Ma always loving us and always believing that we were wonderful and amazing children
and telling us so
on the way to buy groceries at the Piggly Wiggly

me-ma, my mom on a horse, and a baby picture of meHappy Birthday Me-Ma! I'm listening to Freddy Fender, Charlie Pride, and Dolly Parton just for you!

Okay, since it's in tribute to such a special lady, I'll have to lay off my Freddy Fender bashing. I'm just glad someone else actually knows who he is! I'm glad you are honoring this special day.

Beautiful tribute! The Day of the Dead altar is such a great idea, I keep planning to do that and never getting to it...sigh.

Brene, I love your blog - the way you share your heart here - the fantastic read-along that I was so lucky to get involved in (and through which I met lovely friends).

Thank you for sharing!

OMG....this very week, I was telling my students the story of leaving my Balew Bear in the bananas of a Piggly Wiggly store in El Paso, TX. I was with my granny and we were in a hurry to get home because Hee Haw was on. My students all looked at me because they had never heard of Piggly Wiggly. We looked it up on the internet (they thought I made it up). My granny would have been so proud to know she made so many nine year olds giggle.

Me-Ma and I have lots in common! Thanks for sharing!

I would be willling to bet money that "Coal Miner's Daughter" is one of her favorite movies...as it is mine, too!

Next time I pass through a small town, I will have dipped cone or Dilly Bar in her honor!

what a timely entry...I loved reading your tribute to your Grandmother. Thank you for sharing it! I just spent the last 2 days in the emergency room with my precious 91 year old grandmother. My time with her is fading but my memories are bright. We all need to celebrate these special relationships!

Ma-Ma looks/sounds like a real firecracker - and is it just me or is there a physical resemblance there also?

Just love the bit about writing to BB to get you into the Miss America competition, such a neat example of the unabashed love of grandparents. How very lucky you were (are) to have had such a champion in your young life! And so fitting that your family still honors and celebrates her life and influence.

Thank you. Yesterday (12/7) would've been my grandparents 68th anniversary. My grandma passed a little over 2 years ago. Her birthday was last month and I sent my grandfather a card. Makes me happy to know that I'm not the only one think of grandparents lately:)

Loved this post! So thrilled to know that someone else had a grandma named "Me-Ma". That was my grandma's name too. I named her that as I was the first grandchild!
Beautiful tribute,to a beautiful lady.
My Me-Ma was also an amazing woman. Immigrated in the early 1930's at 16 from Mexico, graduated from UCLA! She was brilliant and went on to teach foreign language to high school students and adjunct professor at Community College.
She spoke Spanish,French,Italian and German fluently!
Thanks again for your lovely post! So inspiring...I hope to write a book about my "Me-Ma" someday.

What a beautiful way to honor a special loved one's life! I have tears streaming down my face. My grandma meant so much to me and her life was cut short at age 64. I was in my senior year of high school and it was a shock. She had just moved down to Florida and I was in NY. My parents could not afford for all of us to go to the funeral so my mom and dad went and I stayed back w/ my younger brother. It was a devastating time. She passed on Dec. 17th 1988. That date is coming up and every year I used to talk to my Great Aunt about it (her sister) but she just passed in April of this year. My son is three and it just kills me that my mother and my in-laws are not involved. Despite my and my husbands best efforts they are just not "available" grandparents. It just hurts to the bone because my grandparents were such an important part of my life. Maybe because my own parents could not be. Either way they were a great gift and I miss them. I am inspired to borrow this idea as a tribute to my grandmother and perhaps my papa too. You inspire all the time Brene. Your blog and Andrea's blog have been a life line over the last couple of years as a new mom. Thanks for sharing so much!

I love this. Thank you so much for sharing it. I was very close to my grandmother who has passed away, and this reminded me a lot of her, who I think of often. Really, really thank you for sharing.

Me-ma looks like a wonderful soul..and the last picture with glasses and the twinkle in her eye shows a fun spirit. Merry Christmas. And thanks for reminding us that family is what it is all about.

I guess that the academic essay accomplishing supposes the most time taking thing. However, people count on the comparison essay service assistance anytime when that's demanded.
