I'm totally addicted to this Houston band. I recently met Eric, the incredibly talented trumpet player - very cool guy. The sound is new and old and just awesome. I love this entire album. "Maybe It's True" is haunting to me.

head down. inspiration up.

My head is down and I've gone into serious writing mode. In early 2007, I published a curriculum that therapists use to help clients understand shame and develop shame resilience. Hazelden Publishing just bought the curriculum and I'm revising and updating it. My deadline is Friday at 9am.

Right before I go into writing mode I often start collecting little pieces of inspiration to keep by my side. There's been no shortage of inspiration around here.

On Friday I was running out of the house to go teach and I asked Steve to throw my lunch together. When I opened my lunch I found this napkin. It made me cry. Steve and I have written a note on Ellen's napkin everyday of her school life. On Friday I got my own note from Steve. Don't you love the old-school lightening bolt action!

Friday I was teaching the last class for my intersession course (the 5 weeks between the fall and spring semesters). It was creative arts day and every student did an art project to represent a different emotion (shame, compassion, joy, gratitude, belonging, authenticity, etc.). One of the students handmade these hearts for all of us. They represent courage and compassion. So beautiful! All of the projects were amazing.

Then yesterday Ellen made this card for me. My favorite part is, "You help me bloom. This is a true story."

I'm so grateful.

I'm also revved up on inspiration from this post by the beautiful Alex.

I always love your comments so let me know what's inspiring you this week (I promise I'll only check comments during regularly scheduled writing breaks).

Back on Friday!

PS - I'm changing up the website and blog this week so things might look a little funky for a couple of days.

How fantastic for you, what a great opportunity :) My inspiration? My kids. There are four of them - I'm looking for a dull moment. Looking forward to reading on Friday.

I love the love note on the napkin - that is so sweet and precious :)

this week i am inspired by the snow that has covered my city - it is so incredibly beautiful outside and i just spent the last two hours capturing it on film.... a wonderland!

sending inspiration and words for your writing x

I'm a cheerleader in your corner. I admire you for hunkering down and getting the writing done. It's hard to do. I know from some (limited) experience. Go, girl! And to address what's inspiring me right now? Well...that would be you and your dedication. : )

Inspiration is an important need that I am responsible for meeting for myself. I inspire myself by choosing activities, people and readings that inpire me. I inspire myself by letting others know that I need inpiration (and it results in treasures like lunchbox notes). And I inspire myself by attempting to inspire others (and they often reciprocate).

But I try to never lose sight of the fact that it is something I am responsible for--not something that falls from the sky.

My son is getting over a terrible stomach virus that lasted for days and in the midst of all the vomiting and sleepless night I was surprised by inspiration. I was reminded of a time when I was the center of his world and could comfort him with just my presence. (He's eight now.) Holding that memory helped me get through a lot of stressful hours.

I love the napkin note!

I, too, have a writing deadline this week.....writing about critical thinking and emotional and social intelligence for managers.....distracted by a jealous co-worker who does like the positive attention my work is getting by our agency.

But now I'm home being inspired by - my dog! She is snuggled up sound asleep, her warm tummy full, huge nose on her paws, velvety ears draped on the blanket, snoring.......so peaceful. All is well in her world. I am inspired to look at things from her perspective.

Yet again, your timing is amazing. I'm struggling emotionally with something at work, and I'm simply having to keep my head down and trudge through the loneliness and the sadness.

My inspiration? My patients who tell me how much they appreciate what I do. My students who let me teach them, and who respect me for acknowledging when my job hurts. My friends, who seem to love me even more when I need it the most.

Handmade cards and napkin letters are the best!

My thoughts will be with you as you journey towards your deadline!

Think how great you will feel Saturday morning!

I love the "This is a true story." These items are more precious than diamonds, I'd say. I keep my special notes in a drawer and open them up when I need a group hug and no one is there.

your heart and note on your computer photo inspired me and i posted an Inspirational Body Break post on my blog. I am inspired by the horses outside grazing on their hay piles and my dog who is suffering with a hip injury but his spirit and loyalty have not changed. my inspiration comes from the spirit of the youth I work with...and your blog inspires me daily!

Hi Brene,
Nice post!
Here's my inspiration, courtesy of my spouse of three plus decades...
Sitting with early AM coffee in the den on a recent gorgeous day,
Me: Looks like another beautiful morning...
Him: Syl, any day I get to sit across from you is a beautiful morning.

Good luck with the writing task.

Brene,
Well, I'm certainly inspired by your writing. And then I follow all of your links to more inspiration and then come back to you again. I was kind of not liking that you are changing your blog/website because visually it sings to me. The background paper and the banner are so perfect. But then I realized that I'm looking forward to seeing the changes that are coming. At any rate, as long as you keep sharing your insights all is well. Good luck with your deadline.

Great inspiration from your family. Nothing better than homemade whatever.

My inspiration right now? The deep abiding joy from God. It's keeping me on track and looking past the hard times.

I also am inspired by you. Your courage to put it out there has inspired me to be more open and out there too. Thanks.

What inspires me? Driving to work in the morning towards the Texas sunrise and driving home in the evening towards the Texas sunset. I can think of very few better ways to start and end my days during the week.

I love reading your blog... came across it via Ali Edwards. My creative word and focus for this year is: "Courage." I am a mature student whose first career besides being a mom, wife and enduring many moves... has been as a writer (poet) and artist. I am currently enroled in a Masters of Counseling having just shifted from a Masters of Divinity. I hope to incorporate journaling/ art and other creative endeavors with my clients. I love the energy and honesty in your blog and your book (I am part way through your book on shame in culture). I often find myself questioning why I am enduring the torment of academia again, but I am working on my perfectionist tendencies and looking forward to more meaningful creative work each day. I am trying to stay sane in the midst of studying while maintaining a household with two studying teenage boys. Thanks for your voice of encouragement!

I just read the most heart wrenching article on chron.com about mentally challenged people being treated as endentured servants for decades and had to come to your site to have my faith renewed.

So at this very moment in time I AM INSPIRED BY YOU.
