to be alive

"When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability. To be alive is to be vulnerable." Madeleine L'Engle

I love Madeleine L'Engle, and I loved this quote of hers.

Also, I constantly watch your TedTalk just to remind myself that it's ok to feel vulnerability. It's very affecting. Thank you.

Her books (for children and adults) are a revelation. Especially the Wrinkle in Time series still offers me wisdom for how to be in the world. Thanks for her words.

You know sometimes how the universe blows you away? I am in the middle of re-reading A Wrinkle in Time with my daughter: she reads a chapter before bed, and then later that night I read it to catch up to her, and the next day we talk. I've been in a huge Madeleine L'Engle phase, as a result, and have been reading quotes of hers, thinking about them, tweeting them. This one has been on my mind constantly lately. I love seeing it here. xox

Dear Brene,
Thanks for this post. I love, love Madeleine L'Engle. It is "Heart"warming to me that you are sharing one of her quotes. I sometimes feel like you are a good friend that I want to grab a cup of coffee with.
FYI for you or your other readers... I love her Crosswicks journals...."A Circle of quiet," is the first one in the series. Also one of my favorite parenting experiences has been reading the Wrinkle in Time series (all the books are good) with my 9 year old son. It is like my life coming full circle.
Blesssings to you in this season.

Hi Brene,
Your book is beautiful. What a relief to be reading it. I have been struggling with shame for a while now, except I didn't know about it. The symptoms appear when I interact with others and have difficulty maintaining eye contact. Authenticity is difficult for me and I often hear myself gulPing during conversations. I hate it. I'm still trying to figure itout.

Thank you so much, for all that you do. I, too have been struggling with shame for years; tough times recently as well. Being here reminds me that my vulnerability is a gift and nothing to be ashamed of. With Authentic Gratitude to you and all of you!

I am impressed by the above info I found here. This is really a great news. I myself love such kind of news.
Hi Brene,
I just watched your TEDx talk and I really enjoyed it :) Also, this quote beautifully captures your talk.
Thanks

What a wonderful quote! Thank you for sharing. This reminds me I'd like to re-read A Wrinkle In Time, which I remember being quite powerful to me when I was probably about 12 and reading it. I'd like to explore some of her other books too.

Also, I'd like to thank you in this new year for your books and your ongoing blog. I love your book, Gifts of Imperfection, and I feel so refreshed each time I read a chapter. Its a book I'd love to give to all my close friends and my sisters. Your blog is something that comes to mind to check in on often, and whenever I do I find it makes me contemplative and gives me peace. Thank you so much for that, Brene!

As I read this I had a sudden realization about how much the word 'vulnerability' scared me before I read your books...and how much I would have adamantly denied any suggestion of vulnerability. Without being 100% conscious about it, this has transformed to be something I now see as a value...and something to work towards as a strength :)

dear brene,

i still dont know how to deal with my issues, my hurts, my fears - rational or not - that i am not loved/worthy. and i am so desperate for help. On Helene's advice, I got your book and I'm about 3/4 through it but I am so lost I don't even how to begin.

how do you do it? and can you help me?

I just re-watched your TedTalk for the billionth time. Such food for the my soul, the soul that struggles with connection. You say that we are hard-wired for connection, and I know this is true. I think my life has been so hard because I have tried to and believed that I didn't want connection. The more I struggled against it, the more the universe seemed to be putting wonderful people in my path (husband, children, extended family). I am grateful for them, and yes, I see how wonderful it is to be connected.
